Continuing education certificates will be provided to attendees. The short course will provide 8 professional development hours.

Course Description: This one-day course will provide fundamental background information and concepts to forecast production for developed wells in unconventional, low-permeability reservoirs as covered in SPEE Monograph 4. All 10 chapters of the Monograph will be discussed, but due to the short one-day course duration, the coverage of some background chapters will be limited. The course will emphasize the following concepts:

  • Fluid flow fundamentals
  • Arps' decline model
  • Alternative decline models
  • Rate transient analysis
  • Numerical simulation
  • Uncertainty in forecasts
  • Example forecasts

The objective of the course is to provide participants with sufficient background such that they can use available commercial production forecasting software with more confidence and understanding. In addition, participants may be able to develop personal spreadsheets for special applications.

Participants will receive a copy of the SPEE Monograph 4, supplemental course notes, a hot buffet breakfast and a plated lunch.

Speaker Bio.: John Seidle is a Partner and Senior Reservoir Engineer with MHA Petroleum Consultants LLC in Denver, Colorado.  He has more than thirty-five years of experience in unconventional gas and oil reservoir engineering in domestic and international plays.  His current duties include unconventional reservoir engineering, reserve studies and economic evaluations, unconventional well performance analysis, and serving as an expert witness for litigation and regulatory hearings.  Dr. Seidle is an instructor for industry classes, primarily unconventional reservoirs.  Privileged to work with others on over 29 technical papers, he is the author of “Fundamentals of Coalbed Methane Reservoir Engineering”.  He is editor and chapter author of SPEE Monograph 4, “Estimating Ultimate Recovery of Developed Wells in Low-Permeability Reservoirs”. He received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado, is a member of SPE, AAPG, and SPEE, and is a Registered Professional Engineer in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.  Unconventional reservoir experience includes USA, Canada, Australia, China, India, South Africa, New Zealand, Colombia, Mexico, France, UK, Turkey, Poland, Mongolia, Ukraine.
